Planar helix- A novel slow-wave structure for microfabricated TWTs

Prof.Sheel Aditya ( IETE(India) Fellow,IEEE Life Senior Member)

The most common slow-wave structure in travelling-wave tubes is the circular helix because of its un-matched capability for strong electron-wave interaction over large bandwidths. However, the circular helix is not amenable to fabrication using printed-circuit or microfabrication techniques. Microfabrication techniques are very important for extending the operating frequencies of vacuum electron devices to millimetre-wave and higher frequencies. Planar helix is a novel slow-wave structure which retains the broadband properties of the circular helix and is amenable to fabrication using printed-circuit or microfabrication techniques. This presentation will describe the evolution of the planar helix structure, the techniques used for its analysis, and the attempts made to fabricate the structure using both the printed-circuit and microfabrication techniques. Design results will be presented for TWT amplifiers and Backward-Wave Oscillator at Ka and W bands incorporating the planar helix slow-wave structure.
