Femtosecond Laser Ablation and Direct Writing:From Biophotonics Applications to QR-code Inscription in Diamonds

  Laser light-matter interaction provides a wealth of opportunities for basic understanding and technological applications. The development and advances in laser technology, leading to femtosecond and attosecond coherent radiation, opened many possibilities. In this talk, I will briefly review the present status of the exploitation of femtosecond laser pulses in ablation and direct writing of photonic devices. I shall start by briefly describing the advances in ultrashort laser pulse generation, then will show a few examples of femtosecond laser applications in biophotonics. Then, I will show how direct femtosecond laser writing can be used in bulk 3D or 2D materials to permanently inscribe waveguides which can be used for switching or amplifiers. I will also show examples of direct writing of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) in optical fibers using femtosecond lasers. Finally, I will show our recent results whereby we inscribed a QR-code on a diamond, ruby and sapphire, opening possibilities of secure identification of these precious stones, particularly diamond (Batista….Gomes, Scientific Reports June, 2019).  



  Anderson S. L. Gomes received his PhD degree in Laser Physics from University of London (1982); He is a professor of Physics Department of UFPE since 1990. His scientific activities are in the area of laser applications in nano and biophotonics, nonlinear optics communications. He is an academician of Brazilian Academy of Science, a fellow of the Optical Society of America, where he has been the Chair of the International Council (2011-2012). He was Associate Editor of Advance in Optics and Photonics (OSA). In 2010, he was admitted in the National Order of the Scientific Merit, Classe Comendador in the area of physical science.
