  七、交流内容:

In this talk Professor Cerwonka analyses causes, consequences and opportunities of the major shift that universities across England are experiencing which, she argues, are features of a paradigm shift in the purpose of a university education. She speaks from the particular perspective of the social sciences but the trends she describes cut across disciplines and institutions. She places the structural and funding changes that are underway in English universities in the context of neoliberalism and a consumer model of education the UK government is borrowing from the US; and she discusses the impact of unprecedented levels of student debt for graduates, society and universities. She argues that this context has engendered significant new forms of pedagogy; expectations for research; and a redefinition of academia as having ‘civic’ responsibilities, all of which herald a new intimacy between higher education and the society beyond its gates.

  八、主讲人简介:

Professor Cerwonka (Ph.D. University of California, Irvine 1997; BA Smith College 1989) is the Dean of the School of Social Sciences and Professor of Political Science at the University of East London. She is also Affiliate Faculty at the International Gender Studies Centre at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University.

She is the author of two books and of numerous refereed articles. She published, Improvising Theory: Process and Temporality in Ethnographic Fieldwork (University of Chicago Press, 2007) with Professor Liisa Malkki (Stanford University). She also authored Native to the Nation: Disciplining Bodies and Landscapes in Australia (University of Minnesota Press, 2004). Her article in the premier journal Signs: Journal of Women and Culture (2008, 33:4) was short-listed for the Iris Marion Young Prize for Outstanding Article in 2009. She has received numerous prestigious fellowships & awards from the Fulbright Foundation, Andrew Mellon Foundation, and Open Society Initiative. In 2009 she was awarded a 12 month senior research fellowship at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute for Advanced Study (located at JNU). She was also awarded the honour of ‘Best Dissertation on Race, Ethnicity & Politics’ from the American Political Science Association in 1998 and two Outstanding Teaching Awards from the University of California, Irvine.

Professor Cerwonka has played an important role in senior university management and curriculum innovation in the UK, EU and USA. Prior to her appointment as Dean of School, she has been instrumental in furthering interdisciplinary research between the social sciences and the physical & life sciences, serving as the Founding Director of the Science Studies Programme at the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary (US & EU accredited post graduate university). Prior to that role, she served as Department Head and Graduate Director. Additionally, she has been the Principle Investigator/Project Director of an Open Society Initiative/Higher Education Support Programme four-country, curriculum development project in former state socialist countries (Hungary, Bosnia, Belarus and Georgia).
