【国际学堂】对话莱斯大学助理教授Emilie Ringe博士

　　在她的课堂中，纳米材料不再是书本中的枯燥知识，而是一个多彩的世界；在她的问卷中，纳米材料不再是试卷里的简答题，而是可以治疗癌症的神奇药物；在她的世界中，纳米材料不再隐藏于实验室，而是真真切切存在于我们的生活中。她就是暑期国际学堂—微固分校的Emilie Ringe博士。

　　仅仅五天，学生从懵懂到领悟，从羞涩到自信，从鸦雀无声到热烈互动，也仅仅五天，Ringe从老师变成了大家的朋友。让我们对话Ringe博士，听一听她的感悟与快乐。

成都—我的最爱

Journalist: Welcome to Chengdu, and is this your first visit to this city? What’s your impression on Chengdu? Do you like Sichuan cuisine,which for many foreigners is too hot in almost every dish?

Ringe: Yes, this is my first visit to Chengdu. I’ve been to Asia many times, and to china three times already, visiting western cities such as Shanghai, Suzhou, and Beijing. But I’ve never been to the center of China.And I’m very happy to see how nice Chengdu is. It’s very clean, beautiful, and people are very friendly. And it seems to be much easier to live in Chengdu than it is in Beijing or other cities. I think it’s a very nice city, and it’s my favorite city in China for now. The weather even reminds me of Houston, where I live actually. I like spicy food and am accustomed to it, so I really appreciate Sichuan food.

学生乃大学之魂

Journalist: We know that you’ve been to many famous universities in the world, such as Northwestern University, University of Cambridge and University of Melbourne, what impress you most when you teach or visit these schools?And what do you think of the students here? And what about our school？

Ringe: I think the most important thing in a university is the quality of the students and how interested the students are. That’s what drives professors, we are happy to see interested and excited students. It’s always good to see that. Just the quality and excitement of the student is the best part of the university.

As to the students here, I think it took them a few days to understand how I was teaching. Because I think I teach very differently from a lot of teachers here in China In America, we have a different type of teaching, we are more interactive. I think the students realized after a while, then the classroom became more active and involved, and it was a great experience.

Speaking of this school, I think it’s very good. I love the school campus, it’s green and beautiful. It’s a big school with lots of students, and many of them are very good.

破除语言障碍，勇敢表达自己

Journalist: Many people hold the opinion that students from our school, UESTC, have strong operation ability, whereas they have comparatively bad expression skills. As you said they are shy and not excited or interested in your class, do you have the same feeling in your teaching？

Ringe: There are definitely students that are not shy and that are interested and I think at the end of the class many of the students were less shy. But I think the language is actually a big issue still, many of the students here find it difficult to answer questions in class because they do not know the right scientific words in English. It’s a language barrier. They have a hard time talking about science in English. Much of the English learned is to pass the TOEFL test, but they also need to learn science in English.

十分的努力，五分的自信

Journalist: Compared with the students in America, Canada and some other countries, what are Chinese students’ advantages and disadvantages?

Ringe: Their big disadvantage of course is the language, but with a bit of effort this can be overcome. And also some students lack the self-confidence to speak up and ask questions. Students should not be shy, not be “Oh my god, what if I say something wrong?” That is very important, asking questions is part of learning. And advantage is that often I feel that Chinese students are willing to work very hard.

科研第一，培养兴趣，持续努力

Journalist: Your academic performance is excellent, at the same time you do lots of extracurricular activities. How did you arrange your time when you were a student? And being a teacher now, do you have some suggestions for us?

Ringe: Well, I did a few things out of class. I was a guide runner for blind athletes, and I did outreach to kids during my PhD. Speaking of time managing, academic performance is the top priority for me. It’s not being president of a social club. Your homework and your research is number one and then find an extracurricular activity that suits with what you need socially. I’m a runner, so I decided that as an extra activity, I would join a running club and guide blind runners. My advice is to find something that you would like to do and make that part of your involvement with school, do it for the benefit of others.

As a teacher, I have some suggestions for you: keep on working hard! Read science papers, articles and textbooks in English, promote learning science in English, this will help you a lot. And also take classes you are interested in, if you have a choice. You will do better if you are interested.

留学需知

Journalist:For Chinese students who want to go to America for further study,what do they need to know or pay attention to most?

Ringe: Excellent grades, especially excellent language, in that you are a well-rounded individual, you don’t just do school work, you must do something else such as volunteering work and reading interesting books. Because when you apply for undergraduate, a school will ask you to write several essays, on, for example, why did you choose your field or what’s a book you like to read. They ask for long written documents that need to be well structured and grammatically correct. Being diverse as an individual is very important.

学生快乐，我也快乐

Journalist: After a five-day teaching in our school, how do you feel and what do you want to say to your students?

Ringe: I was very happy to have them. It’s been a lot of fun. They think it was fun for them, it was fun for me, too. When I see them, just their reaction when you see something,that’s just amazing. This feeling of having taught someone something, elevating someone to a new level of knowledge, its great. You can tell them that it was just as fun for me and I hope they’ve learned something which makes a difference in their lives.
